MicroSalt® News: July

The Regulatory Clock Is Ticking and First Movers Win.

In 1990, the U.S. Nutrition Labeling and Education Act forced food companies to put nutrition facts on every package. The law didn’t ban sodium. It simply made it visible. Companies that had already reduced sodium marketed their cleaner numbers as a feature. Those that hadn’t found their labels doing the talking, not in a way they could control.

History is about to repeat itself, but the stakes are higher.

The FDA is finalizing Front-of-Package labeling that will place a prominent “High Sodium” warning directly on pack, not hidden in the nutrition panel. The American Heart Association’s 2026 Dietary Guidance (published in Circulation) identifies sodium reduction as a primary cardiovascular health priority. Furthermore, the World Health Organization WHO’s May 2026 SHAKE technical package urges governments to accelerate mandatory sodium reduction policies globally, today only 28% of the world is covered.

Companies that make the change now can qualify for “Healthy” claims under the 2026/2027 FDA framework. Those that wait will have a warning symbol on the front of their pack.

The barrier has historically been taste. Conventional sodium reduction relies on potassium chloride blends: metallic notes, bitter aftertaste, 24-month R&D cycles, and production line changes. The risk of reformulation has felt greater than the regulatory risk. Until now.

MicroSalt® removes that barrier. Real salt, engineered differently. Crystals 100x smaller than conventional salt dissolve instantly on the tongue, delivering full flavor perception with up to 50% less sodium by weight. No potassium chloride. No bitter aftertaste. A 1:1 drop-in requiring no new equipment and no production changes.

Cut the salt, not the flavor or your margins. The window to lead is open. But it won’t be open to lead forever.

The shift toward healthier products is accelerating. FMI’s 2026 report found that 72% of retailers updating private label portfolios are actively prioritizing sodium reduction to meet evolving consumer expectations.
